The Year

Standard Run Traditional Grand Champions

1998 turned out to be a great year for expanding on Grand Champions and giving us a good bunch of horses with variety in the molds and colors. It was an improvement even over the 97 group because, for the first time, there were enough mare molds for us to have a different one for each of the breeds presented. This was possible due to the addition of the sixth mare mold, the Cantering Mare. (Last year there were only five, necessitating the use of the Trotting, Clunky Mare twice.) There is another pair of Clydesdales here and two sets of grays, though unfortunately no pintos.

This was the year for horses who didn't match their package photos or each other. (The discrepancies are explored on the Detail Page.) This was one of few batches of 90s horses that was produced with differing coat colors for the males and females of each breed, and it could be considered the first in which Grand Champions were really done properly, with attention given to the poses, colors and tack. (The tack is especially colorful this year, with some saddles being colored to match the horses' tail ribbons.) There is at least one "mistake" horse, but several others that are striking or subtle beauties, and surely several Must Haves. Here are pictures of the mares and stallions. Sadly, there were no foals to these guys. This was the first year in Grand Champion history that the adults were not made into parents. I'm sure they were happy about that, but it could have been because Empire was not doing too well at this point, and maybe GCs were not selling enough.
